4.0 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Delhi-NCR, Loud Rumbling Noise Causes Panic

A 4.0 magnitude earthquake jolted Delhi-NCR early Monday morning, waking up residents with powerful tremors and a loud rumbling noise. The quake’s epicenter was near Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education in South Delhi’s Dhaula Kuan area.

According to the National Centre for Seismology, the earthquake struck at 5:36 am at a shallow depth of five kilometers. The tremors lasted for about 35 seconds, sending people rushing out of their homes in fear. The loud noise was likely due to the quake’s shallow depth and movement in tectonic plates, releasing bursts of energy.

While the earthquake caused widespread panic, no immediate reports of damage or casualties were recorded. Videos of shaking ceiling fans and people standing outside their homes quickly went viral on social media.

The Dhaula Kuan area is known for low-magnitude quakes occurring every two to three years. In 2015, a 3.3 magnitude earthquake was recorded in the same region. Dr. OP Mishra, Director of the National Centre for Seismology, stated that the area has witnessed over 420 shallow earthquakes but assured that there is no cause for alarm. He explained that aftershocks would be less intense, typically 1.2 magnitudes lower than the main quake.

Authorities, including the Delhi Police and Fire Service, did not receive any emergency calls related to the earthquake. Officials urged residents to stay calm and follow safety measures in case of aftershocks.
