US President Donald Trump Welcomes Marc Fogel After Release from Russia in Prisoner Exchange
Article:
US President Donald Trump welcomed American teacher Marc Fogel in Washington on Tuesday after his release from Russia as part of a prisoner exchange. A Russian citizen was also freed in the swap and will soon return to Russia, according to the Kremlin.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov revealed that intensified communications between Russian and US officials facilitated the exchange. He mentioned that the identity of the Russian national would be disclosed once they arrive in Russia.
Fogel, draped in an American flag, arrived at the White House on Tuesday evening and was greeted by President Trump, who expressed his honor in playing a role in the release. Trump hinted that another American might be freed soon, noting that several Americans, including Stephen Hubbard and Russian-American dual citizen Ksenia Karelina, are still wrongfully detained in Russia.
The negotiation for Fogel's release involved Trump, Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff, and other presidential advisers. Notably, Witkoff personally traveled to Russia for the mission, marking the first high-level US visit to the country since the start of the Ukraine war in February 2022.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that Fogel's release was not linked to Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine but viewed the cooperation as a positive diplomatic gesture.
